Classes and General Information

First Notes offers all three Music Together class options:

Mixed Ages
This is the essential Music Together class, one that a child can attend from birth through age five—and through all nine song collections. This basic class follows the recommendations of child development researchers—grouping children of a variety of ages in one class. This approach fosters natural, family-style learning where younger children enjoy watching and imitating older ones; older children learn by leading younger ones; and adults are happy because the children in the family can go to class together. Each child participates at his or her own developmental level in singing, moving, chanting, listening, observing, or exploring musical instruments. We welcome the whole family to join in this important family music experience and any caregiver—parents, grandparents, nanny—can bring the child(ren) to class.

Babies
Babies eight months and under may take the special "Babies Class" offered as a one-semester introduction to Music Together. (This class cannot be repeated.) The music activities and materials are specially designed for parents who want to learn as much as possible about music development in infants. Meet other parents of newborns and learn some fascinating music activities you can recreate at home with your baby. This class is offered in the fall, winter, and spring sessions.

Big Kids

You may be considering "next steps" for your 5, 6, or 7 year old. The Big Kids Family Music program helps your child take those next steps in music development by keeping the elements of Music Together that you and your child love and adding new activities, skills, and challenges that are developmentally appropriate for 5- to 7-year-old children.

As you know, Music Together mixed age classes support Basic Music Competence. Big Kids classes focus on developing Basic Music Literacy, which in turn lays the foundation for both formal music instruction and a lifetime of joyful music making.

Children this age are eager to take on leadership, and Big Kids provides a safe, familiar, fun environment for growth, with activities like conducting and improvisation, story songs and "silly operas", game songs, and instrumental ensembles. We recognize your older child's new capabilities and provide a developmentally appropriate curriculum that includes solfege, instrumental solos, choreography, harmony singing and vocal development, drumming skills, and home activities.

To be eligible, your child must turn 5 by April 1, 2011.
Classes are 60 minutes.

Parents may attend as many classes as they wish, but attendance is optional except for the first and last classes and a class in the middle of the semester.

Younger siblings may not attend, except for babies eight months or younger on the first day of class.

Younger siblings may attend the first and last 10 minutes of class.
This class will be offered in the fall, winter, and spring sessions.
